(A shiny new Dime if you name this man! …and No it’s not me~! )
Bonneville…. or what I did on my summer vacation …
The Start of my Trip from Florida to Bonneville 2016. What better way to start than at the Garlits Museum in Gainesville , Florida. Who knew Don Garlits ran a Flat head Ford at Bonneville? i didn’t…and over 200 mph too! Win a shiny new dime if you what airplane is in this video!
Steve and I meet for the first time!
Well the adventure has begun…or is it began, never mind… Steve Garn (Brew) and I never had met each other before in real life. Oh, we’ve seen each other on Facebook and each of us knew a lot of the same people in the motorcycle world, but Steve Garn and I had never met before, at least until I pulled into his driveway. I helped load the van with his stuff, then unloaded my stuff from the car into his van. This how we first had real face to face contact with each other, working on going to Bonneville. I know most of the time you go on long trips with people you’ve known for years that this was a big experience for both of us. The bottom line was he wanted to go to Bonneville and I wanted to go to Bonneville, so off together we went.
So, let the adventure begin!
Kim Garn, Steve’s wife.
Thanks to Kim, Brew’s wife for a great dinner and all the southern hospitality. We got a good nights sleep and Brew (Steve) and I are both were pleased and ready to begin our adventure to Bonneville. Thanks to both our wives for putting up with us in general and letting us go and have fun.
Steve and I both enjoy “touring” that is, making good time, but still having the time to enjoy the sites as we go along. For example we stopped in Corbin KY, to visit the Coronel,,Coronel Sanders that is. It seems his first Restaurant was in Corbin Ky and we stopped to visit the original KFC store. The original KFC or Sander’s was not open, so had to eat at a Huddle House, sort of a poor man’s Waffle House…”Get thee to Waffle House”, as my buddy Malcom Griffith says…
Motoring down the road. We stopped at a Carl’s Jr. for lunch, and for all of you that know the Clutch Family Short Film we just finish…well you get that joke. For those that don’t get it, then come to the World Premier of rent it on Amazon!
Brew, AKA Steve Garn and I are pretty good travel partners and as we have discovered “road Warriors of the highest degree…The Miles float by and we get closer to Bonneville.
Steve Driving with the St. Louis Arch in the background.
North of Kansas City about even with St.Joseph…we look ahead and see a rain squall and it really looks bad.
We joke about at least were not on motorcycles otherwise would be stopping under this bridge and change into our rain gear.
As we were saying this but hail started! Being inside a van when its hailing is like being inside a 55 gallon drum when somebody is beating with a baseball bat, I did mention that this was our first day on the road and party the adventure had started. I hope that brought us good luck. First day before sunset was over 1000 miles and as bonus, we got to watch a sunset over the Kansas Prairie, not bad day at all….
As the night wore on we continued to drive through Nebraska which is 484 miles long and into Wyoming. Steve would nap and I drove and I would nap as Steve drove. We decided when that we were both tired then we would both stop.…Well as road warriors we just kept on Driving and we did. The transmission light came on somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming. We stopped, checked it out and the transmission seemed to be a little low on fluid and not shifting properly. Not a problem, Steve added some fluids and off we go….well that is, until we hit Rawlins Wyoming and there it started shift poorly and slip and then in Red Desert, Wyoming it finally gave up the ghost and died.
Steve and I with a broken Transmission.
We sat at the side of Rassmunsen Road like any other dead animal…
Hey, just for fun Google earth and see if you can find us… Red Desert,Wyoming. It is very pretty country here, off to the north west is old volcano and the town of Red Desert, a clump of houses and trailers in the middle of the BIG sky that is Wyoming.
Steve is on it and finding a solution, looks like we are getting towed 66 miles to Rock Springs, the next big town and then a transmission shop in Salt lake is coming to tow us 185 miles from there…
I guess Steve and I will meet some new friends!
Will this be the end of the great adventure? Will the boys get rescued?
…stay tuned for more!
